3G Network Changes in New Zealand
What the upcoming 2G and 3G Network Shutdowns mean for your Loncel Telemetry Units.
What is happening?
Telecommunications providers in New Zealand (Spark, One NZ, and 2degrees) are shutting down their older 2G and 3G cellular networks. This is a nationwide change happening to free up space for faster 4G and 5G networks.
Once these networks are switched off, any device that relies solely on 2G or 3G signals will stop connecting to the internet.
How does this affect my Loncel Equipment?
Your Loncel Telemetry Unit uses a cellular modem, similar to the one in a mobile phone, to send data from your site to the cloud.
If your unit is an older model equipped with a 2G or 3G modem, it will cease to function after the shutdown dates listed below. The unit will no longer be able to transmit data, send alerts, or receive irrigation commands remotely.
The Solution: To maintain connectivity, affected units require a hardware upgrade to a modern 4G-compatible modem.
When is this happening?
Each network provider has a different shutdown date. We recommend taking action well before these deadlines to avoid data loss.
One NZ
31st December 2025
One NZ (formerly Vodafone) is shutting down its 3G network by the end of 2025.
Spark
31st March 2026
Spark will shutdown its 3G network by the end of March 2026.
What do I need to do?
If you are unsure if your Loncel unit is 4G-ready, our support team can check for you. Please have your Unit Serial Number (usually found on the sticker on the side of the enclosure) ready. Alternatively you can sign-in where you normally view your Telemetry Unit data and check for warnings there.
Check your device age: Units installed within the last 3 years are likely already 4G capable.
Contact Support: If your unit is older, please reach out to us to discuss upgrade options.
